Creating the Surgical Plan

The Pre-Operative Process at Dr. G Cosmetic Surgery Center in Miami

After the initial consultation, patients should take some time to reflect. Once a patient confirms that he or she is interested in a buttock augmentation, a pre-surgical appointment is made. At this appointment, Dr. Gershenbaum will address any questions or concerns the patient has. The patient will need to have routine blood work done and receive a medical clearance before his or her butt implant surgery can be scheduled.

Preparing for a Buttock Augmentation with Butt Implants in Miami

Create a Recovery Center

Patients should create themselves an area at home where they can recover: Since they will need to avoid putting pressure on their buttocks for 48 hours following their procedure, most patients create their recovery area in the living room where they can lie on their stomach or side on the couch. Patients need to have a variety of things within easy reach as they recover. TV trays are useful for this purpose and can be placed at the end of the couch for easy access.

Here are some of the items that need to be readily accessible:

• Medications
• Beverages
• Snacks (i.e., fruit, vegetables, granola bars, etc.)
• A cooler with ice packs and loose ice for beverages
• A cell phone with its charger or a phone connected to a land line
• Remote controls for the television, satellite/cable (extra batteries)
• Facial tissues
• Baby wipes
• A trash can
• Disposable plates, cups and silverware

Stop Smoking and Avoid Secondhand Smoke

Patients must discontinue smoking for at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after their buttock augmentation with butt implants: This includes being exposed to secondhand smoke. Avoiding secondhand smoke and discontinuing to smoke is very important because smoking negatively affects the body’s ability to heal itself.

Discontinue Taking Medications on Dr. Gershenbaum’s List

Certain medications, vitamins and herbal supplements must be discontinued for at least 2 weeks before surgery. Dr. G provides a list of these products on his website.

Ask a Trusted Friend or Family Member to Stay Overnight

Dr. G recommends that his patients ask someone that they trust to stay with them for at least the night after their procedure.

Gluteoplasty: The Procedure

During a gluteoplasty, patients receive anesthesia; therefore, patients are not permitted to drive themselves home following their surgery.

On the day of their procedure, patients need to arrive at our outpatient facility with their driver. A butt implant surgery can take anywhere from one to two hours. When additional procedures are performed (i.e., a butt lift or Liposculpture), that amount of time can increase by one to three hours, depending.

Prior to surgery, Dr. G discusses his surgical plan with the patient. Issues discussed include implant placement and which areas of the body he can improve with Liposculpture.

1. Pre-Surgical Marking

Prior to surgery, the skin on the patient’s buttock is marked according to Dr. G’s specific surgical plan. These markings essentially provide Dr. G with an ‘outline’ to follow when creating the incisions for placing the implants and while performing Liposculpture.

2. Anesthesia

Patients receive general anesthesia, local nerve blocks and medication designed to shrink the capillaries and blood vessels during their buttock augmentation. By shrinking the capillaries and blood vessels, the incidence of bleeding is significantly reduced.

Dr. G has an anesthesiologist/anesthetist administer the general anesthesia. The anesthesia ensures that the patient remains asleep throughout the butt implant surgery.

3. The Incision

Once the patient is asleep, Dr. Gershenbaum makes a vertical incision (5 to 7 cm) in the midline between the upper part of the patient’s buttocks.

4. The Pockets Are Created

Dr. G creates a space under each of the patient’s gluteal muscles. These spaces or “pockets” will house the butt implants.

5. The Implants Are Inserted

Once the pockets are created, Dr. Gershenbaum gently inserts the implants.

6. A Long-Acting Anesthetic is Poured Around the Implants

Prior to closing the incisions, patients receive a long-acting anesthetic. This anesthetic is poured around the butt implants and drastically reduces the amount of post-operative discomfort patients experience.

7. The Incisions Are Closed

Once the long-acting anesthetic is applied, the incisions are closed using sutures. These sutures are placed below the level of the skin; which avoids suture marks and cross hatching.

If Applicable, Liposculpture is Performed

If the patient is also having Liposculpture on other areas of the body that affect the way his or her buttock looks, Dr. G will perform that procedure according to the pre-surgical markings on the patient’s skin.

8. A Light Dressing and a Compression Garment Are Applied

Directly after the butt implant surgery, a light dressing and elastic compression garment are applied over the areas Dr. G treated.

9. Calf Compression Devices Are Used in Recovery Following Surgery

At Dr. G’s Cosmetic Surgery Center, Venodyne Calf Compression Devices are used. These devices fit over the lower legs, extending from the ankle to the knee. These compression devices reduce the amount of blood that pools in the lower extremities, which reduces the likelihood of blood clots and embolism.

10. Recovery

Prior to leaving the outpatient surgery center, patients receive detailed information explaining how they should take care of their incisions, which activities they need to avoid, when their follow-up visit with Dr. Gershenbaum will be and signs to watch for that indicate infection.

Recovering from a buttock augmentation with butt implants:

• Directly following surgery, patients should expect to experience inflammation and pain/soreness around the surgical area.
• The uncomfortable part of recovering from a buttock augmentation with butt implants usually lasts from 7 to 10 days. Dr. Gershenbaum will recommend or prescribe medications to alleviate his patients’ pain.
• Immediately after surgery, patients will begin performing gentle stretching exercises with knee raises.
• Patients will need to remain on their sides and stomachs for at least 48 hours after their butt implant surgery.
• The compression garments that patients receive during recovery will be worn for 2 to 3 weeks.
• Two weeks after their surgical procedure, patients can return to their normal routine.
• At 8 weeks post-op, patients can begin exercising.
• It can take up to 6 months for the final results of a buttock augmentation with butt implants to become evident.

Recovery and healing times vary from one patient to the next. The speed of recovery depends greatly upon the extent of the surgery performed and the patient’s adherence to the restrictions placed following his or her butt implant surgery.
